Summer Reading Tips for Families
Reading with or to a child over the summer will help keep a child's reading skills alive and prevent the loss of reading skills over summer.
Set Aside a Special Reading Time. Read to your child each day.
Connect Books. Make connections to real life whenever possible.
Share the Book. Sit close let your child turn the pages.
Talk about the Story. Discuss the story as you go along. Answer questions as you go along.
Make Predictions. Ask your child what will happen next. Accept the predictions which are made and go back to the book to determine accuracy.
Repeat Favorites. Young children feel a sense of security when they hear the same story over and over. It helps them become storytellers and readers.
Read at a Good Pace and with Expression. Slow your pace when the text is repetitive so that your child can "read" with you. Change the tone of your voice to fit different characters and dialogue.
Respect Restlessness. If your child is restless, choose another story or a different time to read. It is not necessary to finish every book you start.
Set a Good Example. Let your child see you reading often! There is no more powerful way to help children understand that reading is a lifetime activity.
Please bring old KanOkla Telephone books
that can be recycled to the HS Office.
If you bring any labels in during the summer, please bring them to the office with your name on them. That way you will receive credit for any rewards we give out. We have been averaging about 1000/month, and it would be wonderful if that would continue throughout the summer months!
