First of all, I would like to express my deep appreciation to all the parents who have completed various forms for me which help me to both meet state laws and help provide the best health care possible for your children during their time at school.
The annual head lice check has been completed in grades PreK through 5th grade. Parents of all students with evidence of head lice were notified. I would encourage parents to continue to check for head lice periodically. The best precautions for avoiding head lice are teaching your children to never share combs, brushes, or put on other children’s clothing. The most common way head lice are spread is through sleepovers.
Research has shown that head lice are rarely spread at school except when members of an athletic team share head gear with each other.
In past years, staff with the local 619 cooperative have conducted hearing screening. However, as of this year, the school nurse has been assigned to take over hearing screening. I plan to begin hearing screening in early October and will be conducting hearing screening on all children in grades Pre-K through 2nd grade, 4th grade, 6th grade, 8th grade, and 10th grade, all students who are new to the school this year, and any student who has not had hearing screening in 2 years.
I am taking this opportunity to remind all parents of school policy for prescription medications. Any prescription medication sent to school must come in the original container with pharmacy label and be accompanied by both a written statement from the physician and a note signed by the parent. This includes asthma inhalers. The school nurse may not legally administer prescription medications if these conditions are not met.
Most students have over-the-counter medication consent forms on file in the nurse’s office. However, there are a few students for whom I do not have these forms. Without this form on file with the parent signature, students will not be able to obtain any over-the-counter medications from the school nurse or any other school staff. If you have not returned the over-the-counter medication consent form and do desire for your child to be able to receive over-the-counter medications such as cough drops, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc. at school, please send the form to the school as soon as possible.
