Fourth Grade News

Submitted by Dana Richards
The 4th graders started the year with a bang! With the students, Mrs. Richards, and Nana, our classroom helper, we were up and running! We have 17 students this year. All are eager to learn and are working hard to be successful. They are an awesome well-behaved group of kids!
So far, we have been reviewing addition and subtraction so that we won’t lose these facts. We have also moved ahead with multiplication. We are planning to have a little motivational activity, such as building a pizza, to help us with the memorization of these facts. We haven’t decided exactly what we will do, but it is in the works. Rounding, money, and place value are among the concepts learned so far this year.
For reading, we have been working on many different skills. We have been working not only to build vocabulary and comprehension, but also to become more fluent readers. Mrs. Schuster has been helping with this. She is our new helper this year and comes in to our room daily to listen to us individually as we read. We also have Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Dvorak, and Mrs. James as added support in our classroom. We are very fortunate to have the extra help!
NWEA testing has begun this week. The students are tested to see how they score in reading, math, and science. They will be tested again in the winter and a third time in the spring. These scores allow the teachers to address each student’s individual needs and teach accordingly.
We are planning to make an animal habitat in the form of a diorama in science. Each child will choose an animal in which to build a habitat. It will need to include a food source, shelter, water, and anything else that their animal would need to have in its environment. We will try to make these realistic, only scaled down in size. Research will have to be done in the computer lab and notes taken so that the facts on each animal are accurate. Only then will the students be allowed to begin with the building process. It will be a messy endeavor, but well worth the cleaning up time!
As you can tell, we have really been busy and we have only just begun! There is much to do and we will continue to do our best as we strive to grow and learn. We are looking forward to a great year of learning!
