"The Wizard of Oz" Takes South Haven by Storm

On November 12 - 14, 2009 the cast and crew of the South Haven High School "Wizard of Oz" swept the audiences with their spectacular performances.  Paying tribute to the 70th Anniversary of the famous story about a girl from Kansas finding herself in the middle of the fantasy world Oz, the director, Mrs. Virginia Metzinger, decided it was time to bring this production back to South Haven.  The musical was performed in the fall of 1993 and several members of that cast attended the Saturday evening performance.  The students performed exceptionally well and conveyed the "on-stage" version of the play superbly.  The scenery, props, and costumes played a major role in bringing this fairytale to life.  With the help of Mr. & Mrs. James Fair, Mr. & Mrs. Larry Ruse, and Mr. & Mrs. Curl, the set, scenery, and costumes made the make-believe story seem so real.  Others who assisted in the props, scenery, and make-up were: Mr. Dennis Thurman, Mr. & Mrs. John Showman, Mrs. Andrea Arreguin, Mrs. Michele Barlow, and Mrs. Deb Ray.  Once again, Mrs. Sue Harris accompanied this year's musical as she has for so many years.

The story begins in a small town in Kansas as Uncle Henry (Christian Moncivais) and Auntie Em (Launa White) prepare for a twister.  They are joined by their farmhand, Joe (Lucas Harris) and their niece, Dorothy (Tiffany Cook).  Caught up in daydreaming, Dorothy (Cook) sings about a far away land in the number "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and doesn't heed the warning of her uncle and aunt's.  Before she knew it, her house is swept over the rainbow, literally, and plopped right down in the magical land of Oz.  Unaware and bewildered, Dorothy learns that her house landed on the Wicked Witch of the East and killed her.  She meets incredible people like the Sorceress of the North (Launa White), and many little people called Munchkins.  The Mayor of Munchkinland (Erikah Parcher) along with the other Munchkins (Lucas Harris, Melissa Arreguin, Kiley Broyles, Haley Hinman, Keira Johnson, Ambra Moncivais, and Whitney Turek) welcome Dorothy and praise her for killing the wicked witch.  Unfortunately, Dorothy realizes that everything is not well.  She desperately wants to return home but can't and she has now made a nemesis with the Wicked Witch of the West (Christa Curl) for killing her sister.  She learns only the Wizard of Oz (Ambra Moncivais, Voice: Tim King) can help her in returning her home.  Along the way she meets a Scarecrow (Dylan Berry), a Tinman (Kyle White), and a Cowardly Lion (Christian Moncivais) who each want something from the wizard as well such as a brain, a heart, and courage, respectively.  Throughout the story, they are foiled again and again by the Wicked Witch of the West (Curl) and ultimately must kill her before the wizard (A. Moncivais) will assist them.  Others in the story include: The First General of Oz (Kiley Broyles), The Second General of Oz (Haley Hinman), Private (Whitney Turek), Oz Lady (Ambra Moncivais), Lord Growlie (Lucas Harris), Gloria (Launa White), The First Witch (Kiley Broyles), The Second Witch (Haley Hinman), and Tibia (Whitney Turek).

Crew members include: Stage Managers - Hunter Ray and Clay White; Lights/Sound - Mr. Brad Ewing, Devin Culp, and Tyler Norris.
