November Board of Education Meeting
The monthly meeting of the Board of Education of USD 509 was held on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 7:00 pm in the district office with the following present: Todd Ray, Amy Brown, Glennis Zimmerman, Sharon Mason, Delmer Spencer Jr, Chris Deyoe, Brett Butler, John Showman, Kim White, and Suzy Davidson.
Following the adoption of the agenda, the minutes of the regular board meeting of October 12, 2009 were read and approved.
The Board reviewed the general fund summary and purchase orders and gave approval to pay the November warrants.
Sharon Mason gave an update on Interlocal #619 and the KASB Regional Meeting, and Glennis Zimmerman gave an update on governmental relations that included a report that the BSAPP reductions thus far this year will amount to $175,000 for USD 509. Activity Fund accounts and reports were reviewed by the board with Mrs. White giving a report that the activity fund was in the black and much healthier than in years’ past.
Discussion was held on the following with no action taken: an informal joint board meeting with Caldwell to be held on November 10, a proposed policy for early (7th semester) graduation with specific guidelines discussed, the upcoming KASB Convention in Overland Park, an email archiving policy for the district, membership in Schools for Fair Funding, and the Planning for the Future Seminar in Salina and how it relates to USD 509.
In other action, the Board voted to elect Glennis Zimmerman, Delmer Spencer Jr, and Todd Ray as negotiators for the next school term and to plan the staff Christmas Party at Bodacious again this year.
Mrs. White gave the monthly Principal’s Report which included Site Council’s appointments for 2009-2010, National Education Week, upcoming Veteran’s Day activities, the underage drinking grant, upcoming community service projects, state assessments and the issue was raised about sending out school pictures for bids again.
Mr. Showman’s monthly Superintendent’s report included an update on furnace replacements for the principal’s house and in the social studies classroom out by the shop, elementary parent/teacher conferences, school funding (down $175,000 for this year), and the results of the 4-day week survey.
The meeting was closed at 9:38 pm.
