The monthly meeting of the Board of Education of USD 509 was held on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 7:00 pm in the district office immediately following the budget hearing with the following present: Todd Ray, Glennis Zimmerman, Amy Brown, Chris Deyoe, Brett Butler, Delmer Spencer Jr, Sharon Mason (via telephone), John Showman, Kim White, patrons Luke Theurer and Jacquie Sazama, and faculty members Wayne Greenlee, Lorene McQuin, Kelly Hughes, Valerie Bradfield, Cindy Blunk and Sondra Short.
Following the adoption of the agenda, the minutes of the regular board meeting of July 13, 2009 and the special meeting of July 29, 2009 were read and approved. Kim White was appointed as acting board clerk in the absence of the regular board clerk.
The Board reviewed the general fund summary and purchase orders and gave approval to pay the August warrants.
John Showman gave an update on Interlocal #619 and Glennis Zimmerman gave an update on governmental relations. Activity Fund accounts and reports were reviewed by the board.
Discussion was held on the following with no action taken: A possible joint board meeting with Caldwell on either the 18th or 19th of August, early graduation at the conclusion of the 7th semester, the district owned land usage, 2009-2010 teacher handbooks, and the turnout at the August 2, 2009 patron forum for discussion of tax issues and the recommendations from patrons.
In other action, the Board voted expand the district’s Nepotism Policy to allow board members’ family members to work in emergency substitute situations, approved the 2009-2010 budget, approved a $25 student activity fee with a limit of 4 per family and exempting students qualifying for free lunch status and exempting a fee for choir as that activity does not have a paid sponsor, approved a voluntary reduction in pay of 3.5% for Kim White and 1% for John Showman, appointed Glennis Zimmerman as substitute board negotiator, and approved the district’s student laptop agreement as presented.
Mrs. White gave the monthly Principal’s Report which included a report on teacher in-service for the beginning of the year, an update on the out-of-district student screening process, and parent’s night on August 31, 2009.
Mr. Showman’s monthly Superintendent’s report included a report on the remainder of the summer work, IDL room completion and a technology update.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:32 pm.
