October 2009 BOE Minutes

The monthly meeting of the Board of Education of USD 509 was held on Monday, October 12, 2009 at 7:00 pm in the district office with the following present: Todd Ray, Amy Brown, Glennis Zimmerman, Sharon Mason, John Showman, Kim White, Suzy Davidson and Randy Ford.

Following the adoption of the agenda, the minutes of the regular board meeting of September 14, 2009 were read and approved.

The Board reviewed the general fund summary and purchase orders and gave approval to pay the October warrants.

Sharon Mason gave an update on Interlocal #619 and Glennis Zimmerman gave an update on governmental relations that included a forecast for more budget cuts from the Kansas Department of Education including a possible reduction in base state aid per pupil amounting to about $30,000 for South Haven. Activity Fund accounts and reports were reviewed by the board.

Discussion was held on the following with no action taken: the informal joint board meeting with Caldwell that was held on September 30, 2009 and the items discussed at this meeting were sharing options relating to activities, staff, curriculum, supply purchasing, moving of students, and meeting jointly every two months; a seven semester early graduation policy with comparison to ideas from other districts; strategic planning for the current school year, and beyond, utilizing an inservice day in order to involve staff in the process; upcoming KASB seminars, the regional meeting and the convention; a mandatory email archiving policy for the district’s employees and students; the possibility for membership in Schools for Fair Funding; the installation of a sign by the new fire hydrant adjacent to the circle drive warning drivers of the possibility of a ticket should they choose to park there; and students’ lunch times.

In other action, the Board voted to approve the budget audit done by Randy Ford of Busby Smith & Ford.

Mrs. White gave the monthly Principal’s Report which included an update on the league meeting, a report on homecoming activities and community service projects, the district’s hosting of the Regional Volleyball Tournament, a congratulations letter from KSDE for state assessments, online lesson plans, A South Haven virtual Tour being designed by Mrs. Berline’s class, Football district assignments for 2010-2011, and a recap of the first quarter’s activities.

Mr. Showman’s monthly Superintendent’s report included an update on the repair of roof leaks in the north gym, replacing the guttering on the north gym, IDL upgrade and RUSII Grant, and the multi-tiered system of support being implemented for reading.

The meeting was closed at 9:18 pm.
