Consolidation News

On March 8th, the South Haven Board of Education voted 5-2 to put consolidation to a vote on May 18th. A temporary board was established with three members (Caldwell - Amy Futhey, Laurie Walta & Cliff Risely; South Haven - Amy Brown, Todd Ray & Glennis Zimmerman) from each board. A seventh member (Gage Overall) was chosen by the six members at the March 9th meeting. The temporary board met March 22nd and visited facilities in both South Haven and Caldwell. The temporary board established a committee comprised of members from both communities that will meet to discuss consolidation issues starting March 29th at 6:30 in South Haven. All patrons are invited to attend committee meetings to listen and provide some input.

Caldwell Board of Education voted on March 26th to rescind the consolidation contract with South Haven calling for a vote May 18, 2010. The Resolutions to Consolidate agreed by both boards are still in place but the public vote on consolidation will not be able to take place this school year (2009-10). The Community Committee will still be in place, and will continue to hold meetings.

On March 29th, the Community Advisory Committee met at South Haven in the North Commons with 24 members present and between 40 to 50 patrons. Gary Flory of the Kansas Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution at Bethel College led discussion on buildings and student transportaion. The meeting ended at 8:30 pm. The next meeting will be in Caldwell (location to be determined) on April 19th at 6:30 pm. Everyone is welcome. More information will be forthcoming.
