How Do I Get Into A College or University?
GETTING INTO A REGENTS' UNIVERSITY IN KANSAS
Beginning with the Class of 2015, if you are planning to attend one of the six state regents universities in Kansas, it is important that you understand qualified admissions (QA).
Qualified Admissions are a set of standards used by the six state universities to review applicants for undergraduate admission. These standards are set by the Kansas Board of Regents, the governing body for the state universities.
The following QA standards apply. Students graduating from an accredited Kansas high school, under the age of 21, MUST:
- Complete the QA Precollege or Kansas Scholars Curriculum with at least a 2.0 GPA; AND
- Achieve ONE of the following:
- ACT score of 21 or higher; OR
- SAT score of 980 or higher; OR
- Graduate in the top one-third of their class: AND
- Achieve a 2.0 GPA or higher on any college credit taken in high school.
Under the QA standards, students MUST complete either the QA Precollege Curriculum or Kansas Scholars Curriculum. (See the QA Currriculum and Kansas Scholars Curriculum at the bottom of this page.) (The Kansas Scholars Curriculum is one of the requirements Kansas residents must meet to receive State Scholar designation.) Although there are many similarities the curricula ARE NOT the same.
GETTING INTO A STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
While community colleges in Kansas are under the Kansas Board of Regents, no minimum GPA or ACT/SAT score is required. You should take the required high school classes and graduate from an accredited high school or have a GED and take the ACT exam. However, at Cowley College in order to take regular classes, students need the scores below in the subject area on the ACT. Remedial classes take time and money, but do not count toward graduation requirements! AVOID REMEDIAL CLASSES!
